U.S. Seizes Russian-Flagged Oil Tanker Linked to Venezuela

The United States has seized a Russian-flagged oil tanker in the North Atlantic after a dramatic, weeks-long pursuit that stretched from the Caribbean to waters off Scotland, escalating tensions with Moscow and tightening Washington’s blockade of Venezuela.

The vessel, originally known as Bella 1 and later renamed Marinera, was taken early Wednesday under a U.S. federal court warrant, according to U.S. European Command. The tanker had been tracked by the U.S. Coast Guard after slipping away from American ships off Venezuela last month, where it was suspected of helping Caracas evade sanctions.

“The blockade of sanctioned and illicit Venezuelan oil remains in FULL EFFECT — anywhere in the world,” U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said, signaling that geography will not shield vessels tied to Venezuela’s oil trade.

U.S. officials say the Marinera was part of a so-called “dark fleet” — tankers that frequently change names, flags, and ownership to obscure sanctioned activity. The ship had been on the U.S. sanctions list since June 2024 and was accused of operating under a false flag while subject to a judicial seizure order.

Moscow reacted with alarm but restraint. Russia’s Foreign Ministry said it was “monitoring with concern” what it called disproportionate U.S. and NATO attention toward a Russian-flagged vessel operating in international waters. State-linked broadcaster RT released footage purporting to show a U.S. Coast Guard ship shadowing the tanker in foggy conditions.

The seizure comes just days after the U.S. capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, reinforcing the Trump administration’s message that enforcement against Venezuela’s oil lifelines is global, relentless, and expanding. Washington also announced the seizure of a second tanker, M/T Sophia, accused of illicit activity in the Caribbean.

Flight-tracking data showed a surge of U.S. military aircraft — including maritime patrol planes and refueling tankers — operating near the Marinera’s last known position, underscoring the scale of the operation.

With at least three more sanctioned tankers recently switching their flags to Russia, the seizure sends a clear warning: rebranding at sea will not stop U.S. enforcement. For Moscow, it is another reminder that its support for Caracas now carries direct and growing costs far beyond the waters of the Caribbean.
