Exein’s Funding Round Puts the Security of Connected Machines in the Spotlight
A large investment in an Italian cybersecurity company points to a practical question behind the enthusiasm for intelligent machines: who protects devices once software begins controlling more of the physical world?
The Financial Times reported on September 15 that Exein raised $270 million at a $1.7 billion valuation. The financing signals investor interest in protecting connected equipment, but it does not independently establish how effectively any product prevents attacks.
Security moves into the device
Exein describes its approach as embedding security in firmware—the software that helps operate a device—and monitoring behaviour while it runs. MediaTek has separately documented verification of Exein Runtime on its Genio platform. Those statements support the existence of an engineering approach, rather than a guarantee of protection against every threat.
The strategic attraction is understandable. A connected machine may need to identify suspicious activity even when its network connection is unreliable or central monitoring is delayed. Placing some protective functions inside the device could shorten the response path.
Yet proximity to the machine also raises the stakes of a mistake. A defensive system that incorrectly interrupts an essential operation can create its own disruption. Performance must therefore be assessed through both missed attacks and false alarms.
Buyers need evidence beyond an AI label
For manufacturers, the relevant question is whether security remains dependable under actual operating conditions. Tests should examine constrained processing power, interrupted connectivity, maintenance routines and attempts to manipulate the protection itself.
Procurement teams should ask who supplies updates, how long support lasts and whether customers can recover after a faulty release. A device may remain in service long after the team that first installed it has changed. Security commitments must survive that transition.
Independent evaluation is particularly important when vendors use broad claims about autonomous protection. Automation can reduce response time, but buyers still need understandable records of what happened and who can override a decision safely.
An industrial opportunity with obligations
For European technology businesses, specialised security offers a potential route into global equipment supply chains. A supplier does not have to build every machine to influence how manufacturers protect and maintain it.
That opportunity also creates dependency. If many manufacturers adopt one component, a weakness in that component could require coordinated action across numerous products. Diversification, clear incident reporting and practical recovery plans matter alongside adoption.
The same considerations apply to public buyers choosing connected infrastructure. Purchase price is only part of the cost; maintenance, security support and eventual replacement also belong in the budget.
