US Military Supports Israeli Efforts Amidst Intensified Border Clash
A U.S. official confirmed on Sunday that the U.S. military assisted Israel in tracking the barrage of rockets and drones launched by Hezbollah. However, the official clarified that the U.S. played no role in the Israeli strikes on Lebanon or the interception of Hezbollah’s projectiles.
Early Sunday, Hezbollah, an Iran-backed Lebanese militant group, launched hundreds of rockets and drones towards Israel. In response, Israel’s military conducted extensive airstrikes in southern Lebanon, deploying around 100 jets in one of the most significant clashes in over 10 months of border conflict.
The conflict resulted in three confirmed deaths in Lebanon and one in Israel, though damage in Israel appeared to be limited. Hezbollah indicated it was not planning additional strikes in the immediate future. The group claimed responsibility for firing 320 Katyusha rockets at Israel, targeting 11 military installations in what it termed as the first phase of retaliation for the assassination of a senior Hezbollah leader, Shukr.
In response, Israel’s military reported that it had thwarted a larger planned attack by Hezbollah through pre-emptive airstrikes. Israeli forces struck more than 40 Hezbollah launch sites, claiming to have destroyed thousands of rocket launchers primarily aimed at northern Israel, with some strikes targeting central regions.
Hezbollah rejected Israel’s claims of thwarted plans, asserting that the initial attack proceeded as intended and suggesting that further responses would be forthcoming over time.
While the U.S. provided tracking support, the official emphasized that the U.S. did not participate in the Israeli airstrikes or the defense measures against the Hezbollah rockets and drones. The cooperation between the U.S. and Israel reflects ongoing strategic collaboration amid heightened regional tensions.
This escalation underscores the fragile security situation in the region and the complex interplay of military and diplomatic efforts involved.
