A silent catastrophe is unfolding across the coastal areas of Somaliland, gripping the regions of Saaxil, Salal, Maroodijeex, and Awdal in the relentless grip of a devastating drought. For two agonizing years, the skies have offered no relief, and the land has yielded no water, pushing communities to the brink of survival.

The very essence of their livelihoods, their precious livestock, are perishing daily, leaving families stripped of their last vestiges of hope. Heart-wrenching scenes unfold where the elderly, too frail to move, succumb to the harsh conditions alongside their dying animals in desolate landscapes.

Indeed, the Quran reminds us: “And He it is who sends down rain from the sky, and We produce thereby the growth of all things. We produce from it greenery from which We produce grains arranged in layers. And from the palm trees – of its emerging fruit are clusters hanging low. And gardens of grapevines and olives and pomegranates, similar yet varied. Look at [each of] its fruit when it yields and [at] its ripening. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.” (Quran 6:99) – a poignant reminder of the life-giving rain that now eludes Somaliland.

In this dire hour, when despair threatens to consume all, one beacon of hope stands resolute: The Alrahma Charity Foundation. According to WARYATV, Alrahma is the only organization consistently delivering aid, with even the Somaliland government providing only a few water tankers, and tragically, no assistance whatsoever from UN agencies operating in Somaliland.

The voices from the ground, like Ali, a local resident featured in a video clip, speak of empty camps and devastating livestock losses, a stark testament to the severity of this crisis. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “The best charity is giving water to drink.” (Ahmad) – a timeless call to action for those suffering from thirst.

The lives of these vulnerable families, particularly pregnant women and young children in the coastal areas, hang by a thread. Malnutrition is rampant, threatening the very existence of a generation. They desperately need continuous support until the rains, by God’s mercy, finally return. The Alrahma Charity Foundation has already brought life-saving water tankers to communities in Foodka, Bildhalay, and Hayaablay, whose gratitude is immeasurable.

Al-rahma, a Somaliland-registered charity established in 2002, born from the spirit of Miskiin-Kalkaal, is driven by a profound vision: to empower the needy and transform lives, fostering communities rooted in good health, education, and sustainable livelihoods.

Their mission is to provide the essentials—food, clothing, medicine, and shelter—and create an enabling environment for effective humanitarian and development assistance, guiding all Somali people towards self-sufficiency.

The Quran also states: “And whatever good you [believers] spend, it will be repaid to you in full, and you will not be wronged.” (Quran 2:272) – emphasizing the immense reward for acts of charity.

Climate expert Muxubo Ali, speaking to WARYATV, explains that climate change has profoundly disrupted Somaliland’s traditional four seasons, bringing frequent and severe droughts and floods, increasing land degradation, and devastating crop and livestock productivity. When rainfall consistently falls below normal for extended periods, streamflows diminish, reservoirs shrink, and well depths plunge, turning dry spells into full-blown droughts.

This is a direct appeal to the conscience of the world. It is time for the Somaliland government and UN agencies in Somaliland to heed the urgent cries of these people. Their inaction is costing lives. We implore wealthy individuals and compassionate people everywhere to join The Alrahma Charity Foundation in their tireless efforts.

نداء عاجل: أزمة الجفاف في صوماليلاند

كارثة صامتة تتكشف في المناطق الساحلية من صوماليلاند، حيث تضرب مناطق ساحل وسلال ومارودي جيح وأودال قبضة جفاف مدمر لا يلين. لسنتين مؤلمتين، لم تقدم السماء أي راحة، ولم تنتج الأرض أي ماء، مما دفع المجتمعات إلى حافة البقاء. إن جوهر سبل عيشهم، مواشيهم الثمينة، تهلك يومًا بعد يوم، تاركة العائلات مجردة من آخر بصيص أمل. تتكشف مشاهد مفجعة حيث يستسلم كبار السن، الضعفاء جدًا على الحركة، للظروف القاسية إلى جانب حيواناتهم المحتضرة في المناظر الطبيعية القاحلة.

حقًا، يذكرنا القرآن الكريم: “وَهُوَ الَّذِي أَنزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً فَأَخْرَجْنَا بِهِ نَبَاتَ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ فَأَخْرَجْنَا مِنْهُ خَضِرًا نُّخْرِجُ مِنْهُ حَبًّا مُّتَرَاكِبًا وَمِنَ النَّخْلِ مِن طَلْعِهَا قِنْوَانٌ دَانِيَةٌ وَجَنَّاتٍ مِّنْ أَعْنَابٍ وَالزَّيْتُونَ وَالرُّمَّانَ مُشْتَبِهًا وَغَيْرَ مُتَشَابِهٍ ۗ انظُرُوا إِلَىٰ ثَمَرِهِ إِذَا أَثْمَرَ وَيَنْعِهِ ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكُمْ لَآيَاتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يُؤْمِنُونَ.” (الأنعام 6:99) – تذكير مؤثر بالمطر الذي يحيي الأرض والذي أصبح الآن بعيد المنال عن صوماليلاند.

يشرح خبير المناخ محبوبة علي، متحدثًا إلى WARYATV، أن تغير المناخ قد أثر بشكل كبير على المواسم الأربعة التقليدية في صوماليلاند، مما أدى إلى جفاف وفيضانات متكررة وشديدة، وزيادة تدهور الأراضي، وتراجع إنتاج المحاصيل والثروة الحيوانية. عندما يقل هطول الأمطار باستمرار عن المعدل الطبيعي لفترات طويلة، تتناقص تدفقات الأنهار، وتتقلص الخزانات، وتزداد عمق المياه في الآبار، مما يحول فترات الجفاف إلى جفاف كامل.
