Saif al-Islam Gaddafi Assassinated in Western Libya

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi Killed Near Zintan, Adviser Confirms; Motive and Assailants Unknown.

A name from Libya’s past is violently erased — questions now outweigh answers.

TRIPOLI / ZINTAN Libyan media outlets on Tuesday reported the killing of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, in an apparent assassination near the western city of Zintan.

According to initial reports, Saif al-Islam was shot dead at his residence by four unidentified gunmen. No official details have yet been released regarding the circumstances of the attack, the identities of the assailants, or a possible motive.

The death was confirmed publicly by Abdullah Othman, Saif al-Islam’s political adviser, who acknowledged the killing in a brief post on Facebook without elaborating.

His French lawyer, Marcel Ceccaldi, told AFP that critical questions remain unanswered.

“For now, we don’t know” who carried out the attack, Ceccaldi said, adding that he had been informed roughly ten days earlier by one of Saif al-Islam’s close associates that there were “problems with his security.”

Saif al-Islam’s political team later issued a statement mourning his death and said arrangements were under way to recover his body. The statement did not address responsibility for the killing or whether Libyan authorities had launched an investigation.

Once positioned as the presumed heir to his father’s rule, Saif al-Islam became a polarizing figure after the 2011 uprising that toppled the Gaddafi regime. In the years since, he had remained largely out of public view, resurfacing intermittently amid Libya’s fractured political landscape and rival claims to legitimacy.

His reported assassination comes at a time of continued instability in Libya, where armed groups, unresolved power struggles, and weak central authority continue to undermine security — even for high-profile figures.

As of now, Libyan authorities have not issued an official statement confirming the killing or outlining next steps. With facts still emerging, the incident is likely to deepen uncertainty over Libya’s fragile political order and reopen unresolved questions about accountability, vengeance, and power in the post-Gaddafi era.
