America’s New AIM-424 Missile Pushes Air Warfare Beyond 450 Kilometers
The US Navy has publicly revealed one of its most consequential new air-combat weapons: the AIM-424 Long Range Air-to-Air Missile, nicknamed “Malice.”
The missile is officially credited with a range exceeding 250 nautical miles — more than 463 kilometers or 288 miles — and has already been photographed inside the internal weapons bay of an F-35C stealth fighter. The Navy says it is designed for fourth-, fifth- and future sixth-generation aircraft.
That combination matters more than range alone.
Long-range missiles are most useful when the aircraft carrying them can approach the battlespace without being detected. An F-35C carrying Malice internally can preserve its low-observable profile while potentially engaging high-value enemy aircraft from hundreds of kilometers away.
The weapon weighs about 1,500 pounds, uses a solid-propellant rocket motor and carries a blast-fragmentation warhead. Raytheon is the prime contractor. The Navy describes its purpose in classic air-superiority terms: preserving the American advantage of “first look, first shot, first kill.”
The strategic target behind the program is difficult to miss.
China has spent years building increasingly sophisticated beyond-visual-range missiles designed to push American aircraft farther from Chinese formations.
The Pentagon’s own assessments say China’s PL-17 very-long-range air-to-air missile likely reached initial operational capability around 2023 and may be capable of striking targets at approximately 400 kilometers. It is particularly relevant against vulnerable high-value aircraft such as tankers, airborne early-warning aircraft and surveillance platforms.
That changes the logic of a Pacific air war.
The most important targets may no longer be enemy fighters.
They may be the aircraft behind them.
Tankers allow fighters to remain hundreds or thousands of kilometers from their bases.
AWACS aircraft provide radar coverage and battle management.
Electronic-warfare and intelligence aircraft connect the wider force.
Destroy or push those aircraft far enough away, and even the most sophisticated fighter begins losing range, situational awareness and combat effectiveness.
Malice appears designed for precisely that environment.
An F-35 penetrating forward with a missile capable of reaching beyond 460 kilometers could potentially threaten the aircraft supporting an adversary’s fighter force while remaining much farther from the enemy formation itself.
The missile also fills a different niche from the Navy’s enormous AIM-174B Gunslinger, an air-launched derivative of the SM-6. Malice is substantially smaller and, crucially, can fit inside the F-35C. It also complements the still-developing AIM-260 JATM rather than simply replacing it.
This points toward a layered American air-to-air arsenal.
Short-range Sidewinders remain for close combat.
AMRAAM and AIM-260 cover conventional beyond-visual-range engagements.
Malice and AIM-174B push the engagement envelope hundreds of kilometers outward.
The result could fundamentally alter carrier warfare.

For decades, stealth was primarily understood as a way for aircraft to penetrate closer to an enemy before attacking.
Malice adds another possibility:
remain stealthy while attacking from extraordinarily far away.
That is especially important against China.
A future battle around Taiwan would likely involve enormous distances, heavily defended airspace and intense competition over tankers, surveillance aircraft, airborne command centers and long-range bombers.
The United States therefore cannot rely only on having better fighters.
It needs to dismantle the network supporting Chinese fighters before those aircraft can bring their own long-range weapons into the fight.
That is what makes the AIM-424 strategically important.
Its 463-kilometer-plus range does not guarantee a 463-kilometer kill. Real engagement ranges depend on altitude, speed, target maneuvering, targeting data and electronic warfare.
But the official specification alone changes the calculations enemy commanders must make.
China developed weapons such as the PL-17 partly to threaten the vulnerable aircraft that make American airpower work.
The US Navy is now answering with the same logic—and placing that capability inside a stealth fighter.
The next air war may be decided long before opposing pilots can see one another.
Malice is America’s latest attempt to make sure the first missile arriving from beyond the horizon is its own.
