Africa’s leaders gather in Addis Ababa — and Ethiopia is positioning itself as the engine of continental unity.

Ethiopia has reaffirmed its commitment to African unity and shared prosperity as it prepares to host the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa.

Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh said the summit comes at a critical moment for the continent, as leaders gather to address strategic priorities shaping Africa’s future.

“Ethiopia stands as Africa’s beacon of freedom, resilience and possibility,” Temesgen wrote in a message shared on social media, describing the country’s history as one rooted in sovereignty and independence. He said Ethiopia continues to play a central role in advancing continental cooperation.

Addis Ababa, home to the African Union headquarters, is welcoming heads of state and delegations from across the continent for the high-level gathering. The summit is expected to focus on implementation of Agenda 2063, the AU’s long-term development blueprint aimed at transforming Africa into a hub for inclusive growth and sustainable development.

Discussions will also cover peace and security, economic integration, institutional reform and measures to accelerate progress toward shared development goals.

Temesgen described the assembly as an opportunity to reflect on achievements, confront ongoing challenges and recommit to deeper collaboration. He emphasized Ethiopia’s continued diplomatic engagement and support for initiatives aligned with continental priorities.

The annual summit remains one of the most significant political forums in Africa, shaping policy direction and reinforcing cooperation among member states at a time of economic strain and security challenges across several regions.

As leaders convene in Ethiopia’s capital, the message from Addis Ababa is clear: continental unity remains both the ambition and the necessity for Africa’s next chapter.
