Horror at Liido Beach: Al-Shabaab’s Ruthless Attack Sparks Outrage
Somaliland condemns a devastating Al-Shabaab attack on Mogadishu’s Liido Beach, resulting in over 30 deaths and more than 60 injuries. The assault highlights ongoing security challenges in Somalia.
Somaliland has vehemently condemned a horrific attack on Liido Beach in Mogadishu that left over 30 dead and more than 60 injured. The brutal assault, involving a suicide bombing and gunfire, was claimed by the Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Somaliland expressed deep sorrow, describing the attack as a “merciless terrorist act” that targeted innocent civilians, predominantly young people.
The chaos began late Friday near a popular beach restaurant and hotel. According to police, three attackers were killed in a firefight with law enforcement, one detonated a suicide bomb, and one was captured alive. Among the deceased was a soldier, with the majority of the victims being civilians.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and other leaders condemned the attack, reaffirming their commitment to eradicating Al-Shabaab. “The government is determined to eliminate this bloody group,” Mohamud stated. Somaliland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs echoed these sentiments, extending condolences to the victims’ families and emphasizing solidarity during this tragic time.
Eyewitness Mohamed Jibril recounted the horror: “We heard a loud explosion followed by gunfire. I saw many people lying on the beach asking for help, but no one dared to assist because there was ongoing shooting.”
Al-Shabaab, affiliated with al-Qaida, has long sought to overthrow the Somali federal government and establish a fundamentalist Islamic state. Emerging from two decades of turmoil following the overthrow of Somalia’s military dictatorship, the group remains a formidable threat despite significant counteroffensives by the Somali government and its allies, including the United States and the African Union.
Despite these efforts, Al-Shabaab continues to launch significant and coordinated attacks, highlighting the persistent security challenges in Somalia. The Liido Beach attack is one of the deadliest in Mogadishu in recent memory. This area has frequently been targeted, with previous assaults including a six-hour siege on a beachside hotel in 2023 that caused numerous casualties.
The audacity and brutality of this latest attack underscore the urgent need for sustained and enhanced efforts to combat terrorism in the region. The international community’s support remains crucial in the ongoing battle against Al-Shabaab, as the group’s capability to execute such deadly assaults poses a significant threat to regional stability and security.
