USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Georgia Head to the Middle East Amid Rising Tensions Over Assassinations of Hamas and Hezbollah Leaders
The Pentagon has intensified its military presence in the Middle East, hastening the deployment of key naval assets in response to escalating tensions with Iran. U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin ordered the Ohio-class guided-missile submarine USS Georgia and the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier to expedite their transit toward the region. This move follows concerns that Iran is preparing a retaliatory attack against Israel after the recent assassination of Hamas’ political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut.
The USS Georgia, a nuclear-powered submarine equipped with up to 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles, and the USS Abraham Lincoln, which carries F-35C stealth fighter aircraft, are part of a broader U.S. military buildup in the Mediterranean and Gulf waters. This strategic deployment comes as Iranian leaders have vowed to retaliate for the assassinations, despite ongoing U.S. diplomatic efforts to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
