Police detain 20 women in Eldama Ravine, sparking an investigation into a potential human trafficking operation.
Police in Eldama Ravine, Kenya, are investigating a suspected human trafficking syndicate after intercepting a vehicle transporting 20 women under suspicious conditions. The incident occurred along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway, where the vehicle was stopped for speeding. The driver managed to flee, leaving the women, who appeared starved and lacked valid identification, in the hands of the authorities.
Koibatek Sub-County Police Commander Joel Chepkwony reported that the women, aged between 20 and 25, were dressed in buibuis and had no identification cards. They hailed from diverse regions across Kenya, including Mombasa, Kakamega, and Nairobi, indicating a widespread network.
Sub-County Officer in Charge of Criminal Investigations, Richard Cheruiyot, highlighted the ongoing efforts to unravel the syndicate’s operations and ascertain the final destination and purpose of the women’s journey. The vehicle’s ownership is being traced in collaboration with the National Transport Services Authority as part of the investigation.
This case underscores the persistent issue of human trafficking within and beyond Kenya’s borders, prompting a rigorous law enforcement response to identify and dismantle such networks. The women are currently being held for further interrogation as authorities work diligently to expose and bring to justice those responsible for this heinous crime.
