Seized cache includes surveillance gear, carbon fibers, and advanced drone components as Iran’s maritime smuggling to Yemen intensifies.
Yemeni forces have intercepted a vessel off the coast of Aden carrying a large cache of drone components and advanced military equipment allegedly bound for the Iran-backed Houthi movement, Asharq Al-Awsat reported on Tuesday.
According to the report, the shipment originated from Iran and contained high-grade surveillance gear, electronic components, and precision drone technology intended to enhance the Houthis’ growing aerial warfare capabilities. Three suspected smugglers aboard the vessel were detained following the seizure.
Authorities said the confiscated materials included advanced electronic chips, communication devices, high-capacity batteries, carbon fiber components used in drone construction, and high-resolution cameras suitable for both day and night operations.
The haul also featured specialized remote-control systems and navigation tools that mirror those previously recovered from downed Houthi drones in Yemen and the Red Sea.
The interception marks the third major smuggling attempt thwarted in recent weeks, underscoring the persistent challenge of Iranian weapons trafficking through maritime routes in the Gulf of Aden and Arabian Sea.
The Houthis, who control much of northern Yemen, have dramatically escalated their drone and missile attacks since the start of the Gaza war, targeting Israeli territory, commercial vessels, and Western naval assets in the Red Sea under the pretext of supporting Palestinians.
Regional intelligence officials say these operations reflect Tehran’s broader strategy to project power and disrupt global trade routes via its network of proxies. Yemen’s government, supported by the Saudi-led coalition, has warned that continued Iranian support risks prolonging the conflict and destabilizing international shipping lanes critical to world commerce.
