G7 Finance Ministers Are Preparing for an AI Attack on the Banking System
From conventional hacking to automated disruption
G7 finance ministers and central-bank leaders have approved tabletop exercises simulating AI-enabled cyberattacks against financial institutions. The exercises will test existing response protocols and may include private banks and other financial companies.
The decision follows warnings that advanced AI could accelerate vulnerability discovery, impersonation, automated fraud and coordinated attacks on financial services.
The systemic risk is confidence
Banks can restore servers. Rebuilding public trust after balances, payment instructions or market data are manipulated is more difficult.
An AI-supported operation could combine technical intrusion with convincing fabricated messages, fake instructions from executives and targeted disinformation suggesting that institutions are insolvent. Even unsuccessful intrusions could trigger withdrawals or market volatility if the information campaign appears credible.
WARYATV Assessment
The G7 exercises acknowledge that cyber defence can no longer be treated as an individual bank’s responsibility. Financial institutions share cloud providers, communications networks, payment rails and software suppliers. A failure at one concentrated service provider could spread across national boundaries.
Preparedness must therefore test recovery without the compromised provider—not merely restoration through it. Regulators should know which banks share the same cloud infrastructure, authentication services and AI vendors.
For African economies, the danger is intensified by mobile money and dependence on a limited number of telecom or cloud platforms. An attack disrupting identity verification or settlement services could freeze commerce even when individual customer funds remain safe.
The crucial question is not whether AI will create entirely new cyber weapons. It is whether automation allows existing techniques to operate faster than institutions can understand and contain them.
