Tanzania Arrests Top Opposition Figure Lissu In Mass Round-up

Mass Arrests of Opposition Figures and Supporters Mark Rising Political Tensions Ahead of 2025 Elections

Tanzanian police have detained Tundu Lissu, a prominent opposition figure and former presidential candidate, along with other leaders of the Chadema party, in a mass crackdown in the southwestern city of Mbeya. The arrests occurred on Sunday ahead of a planned youth rally to commemorate International Youth Day, which authorities had banned, citing concerns of potential violence.

In addition to Lissu, Chadema’s secretary general John Mnyika, zonal chair Joseph Mbilinyi, and other party leaders were also detained. Around 500 youth supporters who were traveling to attend the rally were reportedly arrested and escorted back to their homes.

The rally, which was expected to draw around 10,000 participants under the slogan “Take charge of your future,” was halted by the police, who claimed that Chadema was planning violent demonstrations rather than a peaceful celebration. Despite the ban, Lissu had publicly vowed to proceed with the event, criticizing President Samia Suluhu Hassan for reverting to the authoritarian tactics of her predecessor, John Magufuli.

Chadema leader Freeman Mbowe condemned the arrests, demanding the immediate and unconditional release of all detained members and supporters. He criticized the crackdown as a violation of democratic rights and urged continued vigilance, promising to keep the public informed about further developments.

The crackdown has sparked concerns over Tanzania’s political climate, especially as the country gears up for presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for late 2025. President Hassan, who took office in 2021 following Magufuli’s sudden death, had initially shown signs of political liberalization, including lifting a ban on opposition rallies and easing restrictions on the media.

Lissu, who survived a 2017 assassination attempt and spent five years in exile, returned to Tanzania after Hassan lifted the rally ban in January 2023. However, the recent arrests suggest a potential rollback of these reforms, raising fears of renewed repression as the elections approach.

The situation underscores the ongoing struggle for political freedom in Tanzania and the challenges facing opposition parties as they navigate an increasingly tense environment. The international community will be closely watching how these events unfold, particularly in light of Tanzania’s recent efforts to improve its democratic credentials.
